Curriculum

Welcome to the Westwood Primary curriculum page. You will find information, guidance and resources to support you and your child in all areas of our curriculum.

Computing and ICT

At Westwood all children have access to and are encouraged to use the technological equipment in school. We aim to provide children with the skills to use technology with confidence and due regard to safety.

Technology is used across the curriculum to enhance the delivery of the subjects. The school is wirelessly networked and all computers have access to the internet. Parents are asked to give permission for their children to use the internet.

The computing curriculum is in place to raise the profile of programming, e-safety, communication skills, online working and the use of data

ICT is used across the school day to develop learning and teaching.

Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard. We consider every child’s safety seriously and we have appropriate filters in place to block unwanted web content.

Literacy

In Literacy we follow the Primary Strategy Framework with an emphasis on basic skills such as reading, writing, phonics, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

Assessments and reviews are on-going. This ensures progress and allows us to cater for the specific learning needs of our children. These judgments are used daily in our teaching and to inform future lesson planning.

We adopt a cross curricular approach so that the learning carried out in Literacy is applied to all subject areas. ICT is an integral part of our Literacy teaching and learning.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we follow the Primary Strategy Framework with an emphasis on basic skills.

We constantly assess and review the children’s progress and specific needs in Mathematics and plan lessons according to their requirements.

We encourage children to use and apply the mathematical skills and understanding they learn in lessons to other areas of the curriculum and other real life situations.

We use ICT during lessons as a learning and teaching tool which the children enjoy and this is an area that is constantly being developed in mathematics with the introduction of new resources and games.

Science

At Westwood, we see science as being primarily concerned with the gathering of experiences that are connected to the child’s immediate environment.

However, despite a child’s natural ability to observe, make comparisons and ask questions, we are aware that children will use these natural skills to much greater advantage if we can provide structured opportunities for them.

Science is developed through discreet teaching and themed topics - the scuentific enquiry is developed further throughout the curriculum offer.

Within such scientific activities, the children will be shown how to use equipment safely and how to work co-operatively. During a child’s time at Westwood, we aim to make science enjoyable by making use of spontaneous interest, while at the same time giving structure and balance to these experiences through careful planning and organisation.
